Co-Founder & Artistic Director
Katy Pfaffl found her second calling teaching music at the Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project in 2015 and returned to New York with a mission to ensure the children she worked with would have consistent access to an arts education year-round. She and fellow teacher, Ben Houghton, began by producing a series of fundraising concerts featuring their Broadway friends to create a fellowship that would send music educators to India for 3 months. This concert series inspired Katy & Ben to start the non-profit Broadway for Arts Education (BAE). Today, the BAE music program at Shanti Bhavan is thriving with 3 choirs, private virtual piano and voice lessons by top music educators from around the world, and general music classes for pre-k-5th graders. BAE has also developed a conservatory style arts program in Jacmel, Haiti serving over 300 underserved and physically disabled children and adults learning singing, drums, visual art and dance taught by Haitian performing/teaching artists, in addition to a thriving after school virtual arts program in NYC with the Urban Assembly school system bringing Broadway performers and top arts educators into the classrooms to teach Rhythms & Dance, Acting & Film, Music Production and Performance poetry. During the pandemic, BAE built a music production program at the Tomas Berlanga School in The Galapagos Islands, and has much more on the horizon, with a team of Broadway Ambassadors - 12 performers from the Broadway Community devoted to helping the students and community of BAE grow.
