Katy Pfaffl is a versatile voice/music teacher, multi-instrumentalist, and composer with a background in musical theater. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), focusing on Musical Theater, Katy embarked on a multifaceted career that has taken her to Broadway stages and beyond. In her Broadway journey, Katy captivated audiences by originating the role of 'Song Woman' in the Tony Award-winning production of War Horse at Lincoln Center. Beyond her theatrical triumphs, Katy's impact extends into the music industry, where she has garnered acclaim with six original albums under the moniker Mighty Kate. Her versatility shines through as a vocalist, pianist, guitarist, and violinist, establishing her as a powerhouse across multiple musical domains.
As a composer and music director, Katy has led the creation of two original musicals in the vibrant landscape of New York City. Her talents have also been sought after for prestigious commissions, such as crafting anthems for momentous occasions like the grand opening of the Chase Center Arena in San Francisco and a poignant tribute to female global diplomats at the United Nations. Katy's creative prowess transcends stage boundaries, as evidenced by her award-winning scoring for film and television, notably earning Best Score at the 2023 Berkeley Film Festival for her work on the feature film Stargazer.
For the past 24 years, Katy has been a coveted private voice teacher, vocal performance coach, and certified life coach/career coach/transformational life coach for the Broadway and Performing community. Her past and current students include Academy Award Nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Tony Winner Matt Doyle (Gossip Girl), Kelli Barrett (Fosse/Verdon), Reshma Shetty (Pure Genius/Royal Pains), Gabrielle Ruiz (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Dan Amboyer (Younger), Tracee Chimo (Orange is the New Black / Madame Secretary), Tiffany Mann (Rise), as well as Broadway sensations Jenn Gambatese, Jen Cody, Jon Rua, and many more.
Katy has worked with students in over 50 Broadway shows (and National tours), including Merrily We Roll Along, The Outsiders, Lempicka, Back to the Future, New York, New York, Hamilton, Moulin Rouge, Hadestown, Leopoldstadt, Beetlejuice, Phantom of the Opera, Mean Girls, Frozen, Waitress, Come From Away, Wicked, The Lehman Trilogy, Paradise Square, Mr. Saturday Night, My Fair Lady, The Book of Mormon, SpongeBob the Musical, Pretty Women, Be More Chill, Kinky Boots, Getting the Band Back Together, Aladdin, American Psycho, Fun Home, On Your Feet, Tuck Everlasting, Dr. Zhivago, Once, Side Show, Violet, War Horse, Evita, Spiderman, The Lion King, Jersey Boys, Hands on a Hard Body, American Idiot, In the Heights, West Side Story, Rent, Hair, Shrek, Tarzan, 13, South Pacific, Grease, Les Miserables, Legally Blonde, and upcoming Broadway productions of Sinatra, Beaches.
Katy has also curated and taught voice/musical theater programs and masterclasses at the Juilliard School with the BT Turkish Music Exchange Summer Program, Broadway Dance Center Pro-Semester, NYC, Broadway Bootcamp in Loveland, CO, University of Cincinnati (CCM), American University, Middlebury College, University of Colorado (Colorado Springs), and internationally with BT Muzik (Istanbul/Bodrum, Turkey), Dream Box Arts (Shenzhen, China), Broadway in Japan (Tokyo, Japan), Shanti Bhavan Children’s Project (Tamil Nadu, India), Nkosi's Haven (Johannesburg, South Africa), and the upcoming Trentino Music Festival (Ventino, Italy).
In 2016, Katy Co-Founded Broadway for Arts Education (BAE), a nonprofit organization that uses arts education to dismantle systemic barriers to success for underserved youth. Partnering with the Broadway community and schools worldwide, BAE brings a culturally responsive and decolonized approach to arts education. BAE is widely celebrated for its involvement of the Broadway community in the classroom, featuring over 150 performers volunteering their time and talents. Currently, BAE brings arts education programs to underserved and disadvantaged youth in NYC, India, Haiti, and the Galapagos Islands, serving over 1200+ youth in the US and worldwide.
